First, cut off a tank top about 1.5 inches below the underarm seams.
Cut a length of fabric for the skirt which is several inches wider than your waist and hips (mine is doubled over here).
You could simply gather the top of the fabric all the way around but I pleated mine. The pleating adds a slimming element.
Attach it to the remaining portion of the tank top, taking care not to stretch the knit of the tank too much. (Obviously you'll still need some stretch to be able to pull it over your head.)
Once I got this far I realized it was too short.
Easy remedy: Add a panel to the bottom.
It's my go-to sundress. I need another one (or three) now. My 12 year old model zapped this one. Sheesh, she won't let me pick her clothes but she keeps stealing mine :)

Very, very cute!
Looks cute. I'll have to try it. I'm sure I have all the materials needed.
I love it. So simple and the top fits!
My significant other stumbled upon you post a few hours ago and I blame you for her heading out and picking up fabrics for her to sow. She seems really excited about redoing a dress she has. So you have inspired at least one person in the world.
love it!! YOu have the best posts, so I'm passing on an award to you!

My bff robynn showed me your blog a few weeks (hmmmm months) ago and I've been all over the place since!!
That makes such a cute dress! I need one, too. Or two, or three...
I linked to your tutorial over at Craft Gossip Sewing:

I am going to do this one day. One day soon!
I am so going to try this!!!!
This is lovely, and the pleates and added extra to the bottom of the skirt really gives it some elegance.
Super awesome! You could also have added a wide ruffle to the bottom! Can't wait to make this! :)
I love this idea! I need an easy sundress and the pleats are so much nicer than gathers (well at my age anyway!) my daughter would disagree. The picture of the cut off tank made me think of a skirt that I made a few weeks back that had a yoga style waist band. The bottom of the tank would be perfect for that! Voila! two items from one! I love sewing!
This is really cute! I made something very similar a few months ago and I used elastic on the bottom part before adding it to the tank, I also added a contrasting "belt" of fabric that ties as a bow in the back between the two. I'm going to attempt another one tomorrow :)
Awesome idea! I have only made one dress but yet I love to sew. Problems eliminated!!
This Is AWESOME. I have a couple tanks that I am unwilling to ditch and also not really wanting to wear Other than Painting cause of A stain ...On the Lower part...Problem solved!! After a Bit of brainstorming I may use a Mens shirt I picked up at the thrift store for the lower part.
I love this and M planning to make one this week. How did you figure out the width of the fabric and how wide did you pleat? Thanks so much for your help!
LOVE! and i know i have lots of shirts that are too short for me. great idea for them! :) lisa
