First, cut off a tank top about 1.5 inches below the underarm seams.
Cut a length of fabric for the skirt which is several inches wider than your waist and hips (mine is doubled over here).
You could simply gather the top of the fabric all the way around but I pleated mine. The pleating adds a slimming element.
Attach it to the remaining portion of the tank top, taking care not to stretch the knit of the tank too much. (Obviously you'll still need some stretch to be able to pull it over your head.)
Once I got this far I realized it was too short.
Easy remedy: Add a panel to the bottom.
It's my go-to sundress. I need another one (or three) now. My 12 year old model zapped this one. Sheesh, she won't let me pick her clothes but she keeps stealing mine :)

This is lovely, and the pleates and added extra to the bottom of the skirt really gives it some elegance.

I love this idea! I need an easy sundress and the pleats are so much nicer than gathers (well at my age anyway!) my daughter would disagree. The picture of the cut off tank made me think of a skirt that I made a few weeks back that had a yoga style waist band. The bottom of the tank would be perfect for that! Voila! two items from one! I love sewing!
This is really cute! I made something very similar a few months ago and I used elastic on the bottom part before adding it to the tank, I also added a contrasting "belt" of fabric that ties as a bow in the back between the two. I'm going to attempt another one tomorrow :)

This Is AWESOME. I have a couple tanks that I am unwilling to ditch and also not really wanting to wear Other than Painting cause of A stain ...On the Lower part...Problem solved!! After a Bit of brainstorming I may use a Mens shirt I picked up at the thrift store for the lower part.
